Biodiversity Food and Water
Four topics amongst others which I hope will be considered:
(1) how can biodiversity be mobilized to respect water boundaries for food, notably in increasing the use of water efficient crops in environments in water sensitive environments (fonio, sorghum, millet)
(2) What impact does increasing the diversity of fruits, nuts, and vegetables have on keeping food within proposed water planetary boundaries, or does the shift towards healty foods mean that achieving food within water limits is more difficult?
(3) diversity, in field margins, or in riparian buffers is an important means of keeping freshwater systems free of excess nutrients and contaminants. At what scale is this service provided? What semi-natural ecosytems provide these services in non-forest ecosystems?
(4) Flooded rice fields are important sources of GHG, but a the same time can be an important means of increasing wetland habitat for biodiversity. What are the tradeoffs between climate and biodiversity in wetland systms and how do we prioritize?
