Prof SK Sharma joined Indian Council of Agricultural Research as scientist during 1976 after receiving PhD in Genetics from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India. After a stint of four years during 1980, he moved to Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, India as Asstt Professor and rose to the position of Programme Director, Advanced Centre of Hill Bio-resources & Biotechnology and Dean, College of Basic Sciences in 2003. He joined Director, ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi, India during 2006 and worked until 2010 when he was appointed Vice- Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, India. After superannuation, he has worked as CSIR Emeritus Scientist in the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur, India (2013-18). During 2018, he was appointed Honorary Professor by the Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, India. He combines in him a range of expertise, a teacher, researcher and institutional leader with academic background in Genetics, Crop Improvement, Biotechnology and Plant Genetic Resource Management.
He has guided and supervised 12 Post- Graduate students. He has won several national and International fellowships and awards like Commonwealth Post Doctoral Fellowship, UK(1982),Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship, UK(1993),Marie Curie European Commission Fellowship, UK(1994), Royal Society-INSA International Collaborated award U.K (2002), Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences(2004),National Academy of Sciences, India (2008), Rashtriya Udyog Ratan Award(2009), Vice-President, Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding (2010-12) etc. He has more than 175 peer reviewed research publications to his credit in addition to books, monographs, popular articles, reviews and book chapters. He has delivered around 60 invited lectures in the Institutes/Universities in India and abroad. In connection with his professional obligations, he has visited about 20 countries. He has commissioned and steered national and international projects and developed collaboration with organisations both within and outside the country.
He has played important advisory role in planning and implementation of several research programmes of the country by virtue of being Chairman and member of several Research Programme Advisory Committees of major funding Miniistries/Departments/Councils in India. He has been office bearer or member of several National/International professional bodies. He has chaired “Project Steering Committee of FAO Project 'Capacity Building and Regional Collaboration for Enhancing the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources in Asia (2009-11)', Chair - South Asia Network in Plant Genetic Resources (2006-2011), Member, International Steering Committee of 'Global Information System on Germplasm, Bioversity International, Rome, Italy (2008-2011)etc. He was also actively associated with Intergovernment Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) as Co-ordinating lead Author (CLA) for Asia Pacific Regional Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services during 2015-18.Currently, he is Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee, UN Environment GEF project “Mainstreaming Agricultural Biodiversity Conservation and Utilization in Agricultural Sectors to Ensure Ecosystem Services and Reduce Vulnerability” being executed by Bioversity International-India Office, New Delhi(2017-2022).
