Trained as a biologist/ecologist I have always been interested in the ways patterns and processes interact across the full range of scales, how and where static/discrete concepts hinder the understanding of continua and non-linear, interactive dynamics. Conceptual consistency of models, rather than directly empirical constructs has been my target. Specifically, I have worked on roots, soils, plant production, trees, agroforestry, forests, natural resource management and related global debates about water, climate, biodiversity and sustainable development goals. The last 25 years Indonesia has been my home base, working for the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF).
