Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,

In notification EM/2021/24 it was announced that IPBES 9 is scheduled to be held from 3 to 9 July 2022 in Bonn, Germany. IPBES 9 will be preceded by regional consultations and a Stakeholder Day on 2 July 2022.

At IPBES 9, the Plenary will consider, among other items, the thematic assessment of the sustainable use of wild species, the methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its benefits, including biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, and the scoping report for a methodological assessment of the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people. See here for the provisional agenda.

Considering the positive experience with the preparatory process for IPBES 8, the IPBES Bureau decided to conduct a preparatory process for IPBES 9, which will include opportunities to review documentation as well as informal consultations prior to IPBES 9, as follows:

  • External review of the draft scoping report of the business and biodiversity assessment (2 November to 13 December 2021), see here for further information;
  • External review of draft task force workplans and work programme deliverables (planned for 13 December 2021 to 14 January 2022);
  • Final Government review of key IPBES 9 working documents (including summaries for policymakers of the values and sustainable use assessments; business and biodiversity scoping report; task force workplans; terms of reference for mid-term review; planned for April-June 2022, with exact dates to be confirmed) and publication of revised texts as “Chair’s notes” shortly ahead of IPBES 9;
  • Informal exchange of views among Governments: tentatively scheduled for week of 23 May 2022;

Already completed were an additional external review, by Governments, of the summary for policymakers of the assessment on values (5 to 31 October 2021) as well as an external review of the draft “nature futures framework” prepared by the task force on scenarios and models (6 September to 31 October 2021).

Further information on IPBES 9 will be provided on the IPBES website at https://ipbes.net/ipbes9. Information on the registration process will be shared in due course.

I thank you in advance for your continued support to IPBES.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Anne Larigauderie | Executive Secretary
Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
