ILK dialogue workshop for the second order draft of the assessment of the sustainable use of wild species

Event type: Assessment
Date:
Date
Monday, 17 May, 2021 - Friday, 21 May, 2021
Description

An ILK dialogue workshop was held from 17-21 May 2021 (see schedule below), to facilitate the participation of IPLCs in the external reviews of the sustainable use assessment that ran from 15 April to 10 June 2021. The dialogue workshop was held online due to Covid 19.

Introduction

The participation of Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) is essential to the process of developing the IPBES sustainable use assessment, as use of wild species is essential to the cultures and livelihoods of many IPLCs. IPLCs have detailed knowledge of biodiversity, as well as strategies and practices for sustainably managing and using wild species.

This dialogue workshop is the third of a series of dialogue workshops held during the assessment process. These dialogue workshops are part of the implementation of the IPBES approach to recognizing and working with Indigenous and local knowledge in IPBES. They are organized jointly by the task force on Indigenous and local knowledge and the assessment expert group.

Aims of the dialogue workshop

The aim of the dialogue workshop was to engage IPLCs in critically reviewing the draft SPM and assessment chapters, with a focus on SPM key messages. These reviews provided feedback to authors regarding strengths, gaps and additional sources of information. The results of the dialogue were entered into the review process of the assessment, for the attention of the author teams as they further develop the SPM and the assessment chapters.

Additional aims included sharing knowledge about sustainable use of wild species between IPLC participants and assessment authors, and exploring how the final assessment could be utilized by IPLCs.

Results of the dialogue

Results of the dialogue include a series of comments from IPLCs that will be entered into the assessment’s review process, and a publicly available report that will serve as a resource for authors, participants and others interested in the subject of IPLCs and sustainable use.

Participants

  • ILK holders or ILK experts from Indigenous and local communities.
  • Co-chairs and authors from the sustainable use assessment.
