Case study
Assessment and mapping of ecosystem services of marine and inland waters in Estonia
The general purpose of the project is to help stop the decrease of biodiversity in water bodies and damaging of ecosystems in the European Union by supporting the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and their services in Estonia. This was done through the development of methods for assessment and mapping of ecosystem services of Estonia's marine and inland waters.
Since the concept of ecosystem services follows a socio-economic approach, there is a high probability that the wider community understands better the need for conservation and protection of ecosystems. The project will be implemented in close cooperation and consultations with the European Union and Norwegian experts. Cooperation with Estonian research institutions and environmental agencies enables better protection of biodiversity at the regional level. The project 's overall aim is to contribute to decreasing biodiversity loss in riverine habitats and of ecosystems in the European Union.
