IPBESIPCC_Synopsis_Message 19_19

Recent claims of massive areas available for forest area expansion and associated large carbon uptake potentials are likely incorrect, and greatly exaggerate what is ecologically and socially achievable. Current scenarios used by the IPCC do not differentiate between natural forest regrowth, reforestation with plantations, and afforestation of land not previously tree-covered, which makes assessment of biodiversity impacts difficult and is a knowledge gap that needs to be addressed.
