There is the general move, especially in Africa to increase the amount of inorganic fertilizer applications to boost crop production. Juxtaposing the shallow soil depth and rate of increase of fertilizer applications, especially the nitrogen-based fertilizers, it is imperative to speak about the consequence of contamination of surface and ground water by runoff and leaching of these inorganic fertilizers. The devastations of nitrogen polluted water bodies are evident all over the world. It is therefore important to discuss the measures to subvert this devastation. | Sat, 01/01/2022 - 00:00 | Sun, 01/01/2023 - 00:00 | 76,788.27 | African States | Benin, Ghana, Mali | Objective 2(a): Enhanced learning and engagement, Objective 2(b): Facilitated access to expertise and information, Objective 2(c): Strengthened national and regional capacities | Organization of science-policy dialogues with national focal points | Convening of regular meetings of the IPBES capacity-building forum | Encouragement of the development of science-policy platforms, networks and assessments for biodiversity and ecosystem services at the national and (sub)regional levels | |||||||

We want to support increase of recognition of IPBES and create a sound ba-sis for well-informed participation in IPBES processes. Project partners are governments and relevant ministries as well as representatives of sci-ence and civil society. National and regional workshops will help to provide capacity building materials in English and Russian, train trainers and prepare for IPBES plenary meetings. After the workshops the project partners are well prepared to take an active part in IPBES processes in an informed and competent manner and to make use of IPBES assess-ment findings in environmental decision making in their respective countries. Footnote: The workshop will target individuals representing youth organizations (working on the issues of biodiversity and ecosystem services) that have an active voice in their community. An open call, including selection criteria, will be issued. The idea is not to explain content to the young, but to listen to the young, to harvest their motivations, concerns and ideas to incorporate them in IPBES work. This could be done by applying nature futures. Potentially, a contribution to the nexus and tc assessments can be envisaged, also the discussion of SUB and Values assessments is an option. |

The capacity building programme will be imparted as Training of Trainee (ToT) mode to the panchayat level through identified agencies like state rural development institutes (SIRDs) and non-governmental institutions. The programme is designed under the larger perspective laid down by the "Convention of Biodiversity" (CBD), the "Intergovernmental platform for biodiversity and ecosystem services" (IPBES) and the governance approaches adopted in India's Biodiversity Act 2002. As envisioned at intergovernmental levels, the linkages between the 'nature's contribution to the people' (NCP) and 'good quality of life' (GQL) have been taken as a guiding principle to develop capacity building modules for this programme. The classification of different nature's contributions under material, non-material and regulative functions of biodiversity received immense attention in science policy platforms. The ToT will effectively disseminate the knowledge and skill required for improving the governance of biodiversity and ecosystem services at the grassroots level through Panchayat Raj. It will also help to impart the socio-economic and governance dimensions of biodiversity and ecosystem services to 2.6 lakhs panchayats in India . |
We may approach the National Biodiversity Authority for their support also. The exercise built on the new political context and highlighted the added value compared to past and ongoing initiatives. For now, the BBPF does not have sufficient capacity to pull of the initiative, but we do hope that putting this on the agenda of policy/research institutions has increased the attention to the importance of transdisciplinary IPBES-like national assessment, to complement existing report and reinforce science-based policy support in the context of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the Belgian commitments therein. We also hope to re-initiate the work once the resources/capacity allow for this, and we remain highly supported to related initiatives. | Ecosystems and Society Community of Practice, as well as national coordination bodies which include administration and agencies from federal and federated entities. | Fri, 01/01/2021 - 00:00 | Sun, 01/01/2023 - 00:00 | Western European and other States | Belgium | Objective 2(b): Facilitated access to expertise and information | Support to the uptake of approved assessments and other deliverables, and encouragement of the development of communities of practice around them |
