Ensuring all drivers are assessed- is human population on the agenda?

It's the experience of Population Matters, for whom I work, that while human population is frequently identified as a driver of environmental impact, it is far less often addressed in terms of solutions and change. The IPBES Global Assessment clearly identifies human population growth as an indirect driver of biodiversity loss and it falls into the category of issues which should be addressed under the taransformative change agenda. (It was good to hear Dr Chan refer to it briefly in his presentatoin.) There are multiple effective and ethical levers for addresing population growth, including policy and behaviour change, but the opportunities (and pitfalls) are often not well understood by stakeholders, and there can be considerable nervousness about addressing the issue. (Further information about all this can be found in Population Matters' 5 page submision to the CBD post-2020 framework consultation here.) There is clearly a very extensive range of options and possibilities for the scoping process and meeting to assess but an informed and positive evaluation of this driver and its suitability as a subject of transformative change is essential. Anyone who wishes further information on this matter can contact me at [email protected].
