Global warming and biodiversity loss are both long term processes that are unlikely to end in the foreseeable future. New configurations between geosphere and biosphere will create new opportunities from which new social and ecological systems will emerge in response to these changes. Scenarios to 2050 and 2100 might useful ways of thinking about these.

I am assuming that in supporting this IPBES assessment, governments are interested in learning about transformation simply because they are looking for a quick fix to the current crisis. Belief in "silver bullets" remain strong. Perhaps the assessment will present evidence that increases awareness of the fallacy of "silver-bullet" thinking? There are many examples of how simple solutions have papered over the cracks of deeper systemic problems and ultimately led to the unintended negative consequences that threaten us today.
