This idea of a Panarchist's Cookbook was proposed by two ecological economists in a monograph called The Invisible Wand, that proposed a systems based approach to forest governance using bio-economic systems thinking. An underlying theme of the monograph was the abiity of humans to change from economic man ruled by the market to sustainable man who learned about his ability to adapt to a constantly changing world. There are many examples of transformation both historical and contemporary that can be used for an analysis to discover some common factors that contribute to success or failure. Policies that are adaptive and support innovation were two factors suggested by the Invisible Wand monograph as requirements for the transformation to sustainability.
