I was born in Korea and have been working in forestry for the last 40 years as a researcher and professor. I have worked at the Korea Forest Research Institute, University of Washington (Seattle, USA) and Seoul National University in Korea where I am responsible for teaching and research on ecological economics and forest policy. I served as the President of Korean Forest Sciety, Chairman of Citizens’ Coalition for National Park Conservation of Korea and President of Korean Association of Forest Science and Technology Societies, and now is serving as a leader of research working group on forest-related traditional knowledge of IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations). I contrituted, as a Coordinating Lead Author, to the Asia and Pacific Regional assessments on biodiversity and ecosystem services for IPBES for the period 2015-2018. My research topics include economics of ecosystem services and policy of forest resources. For the last 15 years, I have been working on the relevance of traditional and local knowledge to sustainable forest management in Korea and Asian countries.
