Thijs Kuiken is Professor of Comparative Pathology in the Department of Viroscience of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Trained as a veterinarian in The Netherlands, he obtained his Ph.D. in Canada and specialized in pathology in the USA. He is an expert on infectious diseases at the interface between humans, livestock, and wildlife. He has worked for over 30 years in this field and has published over 250 scientific articles and book chapters. His research is interdisciplinary and takes a One Health approach, with strong interlinkages between biodiversity, livestock production, and public health. He coordinates and participates in national and European research projects on infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on the underlying drivers for their emergence. He advises governments at both national (The Netherlands, France, Germany) and European levels on matters of emerging infectious diseases and zoonotic infections.
