Valeria Giovannelli has a PhD in Biotechnology, since 2000 she works in the field of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) focusing on the development of environmental risk assessment and environmental monitoring procedures, together with legislative framework implementation. Her activities include the participation in national and international working groups.
She is an advisor of the Italian National Competent Authority (NCA) for the implementation of directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release into the environment of GMOs and for 12 years she has worked also as advisor for the Italian National Competent Authority for the confined use of genetically modified microorganisms. She give, to the NCA, opinions on the notifications submitted, in the European union, for the deliberate release into the environment of GMOs for research purposes and for the placing on the market, provide technical support on diverse issues related the GMOs at legislative and scientific level. She is involved and follows the development of new technologies and methodologies (e.g.: new breeding techniques, gene drive, synthetic biology) in this field and their potential applications at national, European and international level.
From 2014 she is member of the Italian delegation to the COP-MOP, SBSTTA e and SBI meetings of the Convention of Biological Diversity.
She is the ISPRA reference person within the Joint Interest Group on Genetically Modified Organisms (IG GMO) of the European Network of the Heads of Environment Protection Agencies (EPA) and European Network of Heads of Nature Conservation Agencies (ENCA).
At national level she has worked and coordinated a Pilot study for the development of protocols for the monitoring of spontaneous populations of Genetically Modified Plant Species in the environment.
She runs her activities in close collaboration with universities, research centers and other governmental institutions competent in the field of GMOS.
She is further involved in the development and implementation of the EU biodiversity strategy at national level and has also dealt with issues related to forest resources and their sustainable use and multi-functionality in agriculture.
