Italy's Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research
Senior researcher and head of the Division for terrestrial species and habitat conservation and sustainable land-use at the Italy's Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra). From 2014 to 2018 he acted as elected member by the personnel of the ISPRA Scientific Committee. Since 1995 he has participated in numerous projects of the European Commission's (EC) research framework programmes. From 2000 onwards he was lead author and reviewer of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) reports. He is national focal point of Network of the Head of the European Nature Conservation Agencies (ENCA network). In 2007, the IPCC the United Nations Environment Program and the World Meteorological Organizations give him formal recognition for the contribution he gave to the IPCC for the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He has been a member of the scientific and organizational committee of several national and international conferences on forest and environmental issues. Since 1996 he writes for national newspapers (including La Stampa, Il Sole 24 Ore, La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, La Provincia) on scientific and environmental issues. He was a member of the national commission for the implementation of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive and, since 2019, he is member of the National Commission on Environmental Impact Assessment. Since 2005 he has held the role of chair of working groups of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). He has frequently been appointed expert of the European Commission and of the Norwegian and Polish governments for the evaluation of environmental research projects. He has participated - as a member of the Government Delegation - in several sessions of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and of the subsidiary body for technological and scientific advice (SBSTTA) of the UN Convention on Climate Change and Biological Diversity. He has been a consultant in various cooperation projects funded by the EC, the Austrian and German governments, the World Bank, in Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, Jordan. Invited speaker in numerous national and international workshops and conferences. He is a national thematic expert of the Eionet network of the European Environment Agency for Agriculture and Forestry; Climate Change, Biodiversity and contract professor at University of Tuscia. He is the authored over 200 scientific publications and a dozen books and chapters in books. He has produced two documentaries on Italy’s forests and forest system. In 2013 he was awarded the “Premio Vrani” and in 2019 the “Premio Arte, Scienza, Coscienza”. He is member of the Italian Academy of Forest Science and the Accademia dei Georgofili.
