IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas

The IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas (IUCN Green List)  aims to increase the number of protected and conserved areas that deliver successful conservation outcomes through effective and equitable governance and management. The IUCN Green List was developed to enhance progress towards all elements of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 under the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011 – 2020, and the environmental elements of the Sustainable Development Goals (notably Targets 14.2, 14.4, 14.5, 15.1, 15.2 and 15.5).

Aim of the resource

The aim of the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas Standard is "to provide a global benchmark for protected and conserved areas to assess whether they are achieving successful conservation outcomes through effective and equitable governance and management." The Standard helps to measure the effectiveness of spatial biodiversity conservation efforts, and in particular, Aichi Target 11 and two of the Sustainable Development Goals, for Targets 14.2, 14.4, 14.5, 15.1, 15.2 and 15.5.

Requirements for using the resource NEW
  • Anyone can use the IUCN Green List Standard for application in Protected and Conserved Areas. Some data is available via Protected Planet: https://www.protectedplanet.net/c/green-list. However, requests for data for analysis should be sent to [email protected] and [email protected]
  • The Standard (see below) details the Components and Criteria, and guidance on how to apply the Standard.
Potential benefits from using the resource
The IUCN Green List Standard comprises four components and 17 criteria to measure successful conservation, management, and governance in Protected and Conserved Areas
The IUCN Green List Standard is an international benchmark that motivates improved performance at sites and helps achieve conservation objectives
Data about each site (Protected or Conserved Area), and how the site meets the IUCN Green List Standard can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of spatial conservation efforts
