Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,

In notification EM/2021/24 it was announced that the ninth session of the IPBES Plenary (IPBES 9) will be held from 3 to 9 July 2022 in Bonn, Germany. I am pleased to announce that advance versions of the working documents for the session are available at https://ipbes.net/events/ipbes-9.

Considering the positive experience with the preparatory process for IPBES 8, the IPBES Bureau decided to conduct a preparatory process for IPBES 9, as previously announced in notification EM/2021/36. The preparatory process includes opportunities to review documentation as well as informal consultations among Governments prior to IPBES 9.

As part of the preparatory process, the summary for policymakers of the assessment report of the sustainable use of wild species was made available for review from 16 April to 17 June 2021 (EM/2021/09 and EM2021/14). The document was revised and finalized as document IPBES/9/6. In response to decision IPBES-8/1 an additional review of the summary for policymakers of the assessment report on values was held from 5 to 31 October 2021 (EM/2021/28). The document was revised and finalized as document IPBES/9/7. In response to paragraph 4 of section II of decision IPBES-7/1, the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, assisted by a group of experts, prepared the scoping report for the business and biodiversity assessment that was made available for review from 2 November to 13 December 2021 (EM/2021/31). The document was revised and finalized as document IPBES/9/8. The draft deliverables for objectives 2, 3 and 4 of the IPBES rolling work programme up to 2030 and the draft workplans for the IPBES task forces for the intersessional period 2022-2023 were open for review from 16 December 2021 to 17 January 2022 (EM/2021/40). The document was revised and finalized as document IPBES/9/10.

In order to support the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel and Bureau in preparing for IPBES 9, Governments are invited to submit final comments on the four documents using the template provided here to the IPBES secretariat by 15 June 2022. The IPBES Chair may make revised versions of these documents available as Chair’s notes shortly before IPBES 9.

An informal exchange of views among Governments on the items on the agenda of IPBES 9 will be organized from 23 to 27 May and on 31 May, from 1-3 p.m. CEST. Further information will be sent to IPBES national focal points shortly.

I would also like to bring to your attention that the Plenary, at IPBES 9, will be invited to mandate an additional review of the summary for policymakers of the assessment of invasive alien species, which would be held in August 2022.

I thank you in advance for your continued support to IPBES.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Anne Larigauderie | Executive Secretary
Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)
