Data needed for an updated comprehensive assessment of soil degradation are lacking in most parts of the world. Soil degradation processes are very diverse and require specific data for their full assessment. This needs to include actual data on soil erosion, loss of soil organic carbon, loss of soil biodiversity, increased soil compaction, salinization, acidification, etc… A specific effort needs to be developed for the systematic collection of soil contamination data in agricultural soils, given the relevance for human health. An emerging issue is the rapid depletion of the available fertile soils by the uncontrolled urban development in many countries. Housing and infrastructure is mostly developed on the most productive agricultural areas. Detailed data and regular monitoring is required for fully understanding the on-going degradation processes.
