Abstract

Three capacity building workshops in CEE region for 20-30 participants each would help to address capacity building needs as identified by IPBES 3, e.g. 1.1 - 1.4, 2.1, 2.7, 3.1, 3.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2. The need for such workshops was expressed by participants of a workshop on capacity building needs in the CEE region which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia in February 2015. Experts of the Institute for Biodiversity Network would inform participants about functioning of IPBES, possibilities of participation, stakeholder engagement and how to contribute to regional and global assessments.

Project Description

The project wants to run three capacity building workshops in Central and Eastern Europe, one each in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in Moldova and in Georgia. Experts of the Institute for Biodiversity Network would inform participants about functioning of IPBES, possibilities of participation, stakeholder engagement and how to contribute to regional and global assessments. 20-30 participants for each workshop would be invited, coming from the country where the workshop takes place and from neighbouring countries. They would be from decision making institutions, scientific institutions as well as stakeholder organizations. The need for such workshops was expressed by participants of a workshop on capacity building needs in the CEE region which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia in February 2015 (download report on: http://biodiv.de/en/projects/current/ipbes-ost.html). The project would thus contribute to priority capacity building needs as identified by IPBES 3, e.g. 1.1 - 1.4, 2.1, 2.7, 3.1, 3.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2. Participants could act as multipliers in their respective institutions and countries.

Project Objectives and expected Achievables

The objective of the project would be to facilitate three capacity building workshops in a region where there is expressed demand and thus address many of the priority capacity building needs as identified by IPBES. The achievables would be performing the workshops (three in a time of about 1,5 years) and providing a short report of each workshop. The workshops could take place 6 months (first WS), 10 months (second) and 14 months (third) after the start of the project.
